Our journey to Anegada began in the bustling harbor of Tortola. The sail across the Caribbean Sea was peaceful, with calm waters and a gentle breeze guiding us northward. As we approached Anegada, the island’s flat silhouette emerged on the horizon, a stark contrast to the hilly profiles of the other Virgin Islands.

We anchored the Ocean Dreamer in the clear waters of Setting Point, the main harbor on Anegada. The serene beauty of the island and the warm welcome from the locals immediately set a relaxed and inviting tone for our visit.

Anegada is renowned for its stunning, untouched beaches, each offering its own unique charm. Our first stop was Loblolly Bay, a breathtaking beach with soft, white sand and turquoise waters. The calm and shallow waters made it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. We spent hours exploring the vibrant underwater world, encountering colorful fish and intricate coral formations.

Next, we visited Cow Wreck Beach, another idyllic spot known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning views. The beach gets its name from the remnants of a shipwreck that once carried cattle. Today, Cow Wreck Beach is a peaceful haven with a laid-back beach bar, where we enjoyed refreshing drinks and delicious seafood while taking in the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea.

Anegada’s extensive coral reefs are a major draw for divers and snorkelers. The island is surrounded by Horseshoe Reef, one of the largest coral reefs in the Caribbean. We embarked on a snorkeling expedition to explore this underwater paradise. The reef’s vibrant coral gardens and diverse marine life were awe-inspiring. We encountered a variety of fish, sea turtles, and even a few nurse sharks, all thriving in this pristine environment.

For those interested in diving, Anegada offers numerous dive sites with unique underwater landscapes and abundant marine life. The clear waters and excellent visibility make it a perfect destination for both novice and experienced divers.

Anegada is home to unique flora and fauna that add to its charm. The island’s salt ponds are a haven for birdwatchers, attracting species such as flamingos, herons, and ospreys. We took a leisurely stroll around the ponds, enjoying the sight of these majestic birds in their natural habitat.

The island is also known for its population of rock iguanas, which are native to Anegada and found nowhere else in the world. These fascinating creatures can often be seen basking in the sun or scurrying through the underbrush. We learned about the conservation efforts in place to protect these endangered reptiles and their habitat.

Anegada’s small population and remote location give it a unique, laid-back charm. The island’s main settlement, The Settlement, is a quaint village with colorful houses, local shops, and friendly residents. We spent some time exploring the village, interacting with the locals, and learning about their way of life.

The island’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of local flavors and fresh ingredients. We dined at one of the island’s renowned lobster shacks, savoring the freshly caught Anegada lobster, grilled to perfection. The combination of delicious food, warm hospitality, and stunning views made for an unforgettable dining experience.

Anegada’s steady winds and calm waters make it an ideal destination for kiteboarding and other water sports. We took advantage of the conditions to try our hand at kiteboarding, guided by experienced instructors who provided all the necessary equipment and training. The thrill of gliding across the water, propelled by the wind, was an exhilarating experience.

In addition to kiteboarding, Anegada offers opportunities for paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing. The island’s clear waters and diverse marine life provide endless opportunities for exploration and adventure on the water.

As our time on Anegada came to an end, I reflected on the unique beauty and tranquil charm of this flat coral island. From the pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs to the friendly locals and laid-back atmosphere, Anegada offered a different kind of paradise. The island’s untouched natural beauty and serene environment made it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Sailing back to Tortola, I felt a deep appreciation for the hidden gem that is Anegada. The island had captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and welcoming community. The memories of exploring this peaceful paradise would stay with me forever, and I knew that I would return to Anegada for future adventures.
