Sailing to Newport, Rhode Island: A Journey of Elegance and Adventure on The Ocean Dreamer
Setting sail from the bustling marina of New York City, I felt a thrill of anticipation as I charted a course for Newport, Rhode Island. Known for its grand Gilded Age mansions, rich maritime history, and stunning coastal scenery, Newport promised an elegant yet adventurous escape. The Ocean Dreamer, my faithful Fairline Squadron 50 yacht, was ready to navigate the waters of Narragansett Bay and explore this storied destination.
Our journey began with a smooth sail through Long Island Sound, the sun glistening on the water as we left the skyscrapers of Manhattan behind. The Ocean Dreamer handled the waves with ease, and soon the charming coastline of Rhode Island came into view. Newport, with its historic charm and vibrant waterfront, welcomed us with open arms.

We docked at the Newport Yacht Club, a prestigious harbor that has been a hub for sailors and yachtsmen for over a century. The club’s facilities were top-notch, offering all the amenities needed to make our stay comfortable. After securing The Ocean Dreamer, I set out to explore the town.
One of the first places I visited was Bannister’s Wharf, a lively waterfront area filled with shops, restaurants, and galleries. The wharf buzzed with activity, and I enjoyed strolling along the docks, admiring the variety of boats and yachts moored there. I stopped for a coffee at a quaint café and watched the world go by, soaking in the maritime atmosphere.

Newport is famously home to some of America’s most opulent mansions, and a visit to these architectural marvels was a must. The Breakers, the grandest of them all, was a breathtaking sight. This 70-room mansion, once the summer residence of the Vanderbilt family, is a testament to the extravagance of the Gilded Age. Walking through its lavish halls, adorned with marble, gold, and intricate woodwork, felt like stepping back in time. The mansion’s location, perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean, provided stunning views of the Atlantic.
Another highlight was the Marble House, another Vanderbilt mansion, known for its grandiose design and sumptuous interiors. The ballroom, with its gilded decorations and crystal chandeliers, was particularly impressive. The mansion’s Chinese Tea House, located on the grounds, offered a serene spot to enjoy a cup of tea while gazing out over the ocean.

Eager to experience Newport’s natural beauty, I set out on the Cliff Walk, a scenic trail that winds along the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and the mansions that line the shore. The path, a mix of paved walkways and rugged trails, provided a perfect blend of exercise and relaxation. The sound of the waves crashing against the cliffs and the sight of the sun setting over the water created a truly magical experience.
Newport’s rich maritime heritage is celebrated at the International Yacht Restoration School and the Museum of Yachting. A visit to these institutions offered a fascinating glimpse into the history of sailing and boatbuilding in Newport. The museum’s collection of vintage yachts and sailing memorabilia was particularly interesting, highlighting the town’s long-standing connection to the sea.

No visit to Newport would be complete without a sailing excursion. The Ocean Dreamer was in her element as we sailed around Narragansett Bay, the wind filling her sails and the water sparkling in the sunlight. The bay, with its islands and coves, offered endless opportunities for exploration. We anchored near Jamestown, a quaint island community, and spent the afternoon kayaking and paddleboarding in the tranquil waters.
Dining in Newport is a culinary delight, with a wide range of restaurants offering fresh seafood and local specialties. One of my favorite meals was at The Mooring, a waterfront restaurant known for its lobster dishes and stunning views of the harbor. The lobster roll, overflowing with tender chunks of lobster, was simply divine. Paired with a glass of chilled white wine, it made for a perfect meal after a day of exploration.

The town’s vibrant cultural scene is showcased during the Newport Folk Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival, two of the most renowned music festivals in the country. Although I missed the festivals during this trip, the town’s lively music venues and bars offered plenty of opportunities to enjoy live performances and mingle with the locals.
Newport’s quaint streets are lined with charming colonial-era buildings and historic landmarks. The Newport Tower, an enigmatic stone structure with uncertain origins, piqued my curiosity. Some believe it to be a pre-Columbian Norse construction, while others argue it’s a 17th-century windmill. Regardless of its true history, the tower added a touch of mystery to the town’s rich tapestry.

As our journey in Newport came to an end, I reflected on the elegance and adventure that this historic town had offered. Each day had been filled with new discoveries, from the grandeur of the mansions to the natural beauty of the coastline and the warmth of the local community. Sailing through the waters of Newport on The Ocean Dreamer had been an unforgettable experience, blending luxury, history, and a deep connection to the sea.

Newport, Rhode Island, is a destination that captivates the heart and soul. The Ocean Dreamer and I have many more horizons to explore, but this journey will always hold a special place in my heart. Until next time, may your sails be full and your journeys be filled with wonder.
